Under the management of SJSC “State Real Estate” (SRE) modernisation works of the border crossing point (BCP) “Grebņeva” have been started. Until the start of autumn, the construction of four new pavilions and the engineering communications required for their operation will begin, informs Renārs Griškevičs, Chairman of the Board of SRE.

The goal of the modernisation of BCP “Grebņeva” is to create modern work spaces meeting the requirements of the European Central Entry/Exit System for road customs and border guard workers. Four new control pavilions will be constructed, facilities for the acquisition/verification of biometric data will be provided, and the more efficient flow of border crossers will be ensured. Construction works will be implemented by SIA “Delta Construction”.

Within the week, the necessary dismantling works will be started, as well as an additional pavilion will be installed for entry from the Russian side, in order to ensure the current border crossing permeability for trucks. Until the start of autumn, the construction of four new pavilions and the engineering communications required for their operation will begin.

“SRE implements several projects significant for the bolstering of state security, including modernisation of BCP “Grebņeva”. Since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, the need to provide employees of SBG and SRS with modern equipment and infrastructure in compliance with EU requirements, as well as to implement projects related to national security within the planned deadlines, has significantly increased,” says R. Griškevičs.

The construction works will be carried out until the end of this year, so that at the beginning of 2023 employees of the State Border Guard and the Customs Administration of the State Revenue Service can commence work in the new premises. The construction costs amount to 890 thousand euros (without VAT), which will be covered from the state budget funds – implemented by the Internal Security Fund 2014-2020 programme project No. IC/IDF/2020/6 “Implementation of the Entry/Exit system and ETIAS”. Continuing the modernisation work, it is planned to also build a new passenger bus control terminal in the BCP by 2027.

Maintenance of objects important for the security of Latvia and the European Union and the development of borders is one of the directions of SRE activity. In total, approximately 72.9 million euros are currently being invested in the modernisation of border crossing points and borders under the supervision of SRE. The largest modernisation project is the construction of the Eastern border. After the implementation of the projects, by the end of 2027, comfortable and modern working conditions will be available to the staff of border control points, and the infrastructure necessary for border control and customs control will be improved, making border crossing more efficient and faster.
